green midnight

in my midnight garden green
i found nuri waiting for me
he kissed me and said let’s be married
i led him to the lake
and we laid down on its banks
the softness of the things we carried

and at twilight i sing
to bring down the stars
to bring on my green midnight
come, come my green midnight
come, come my green midnight

the treasure i stored up for years
buried in a cricket-thick field
nuri never knew how much he loved it
the darkness that runs through my veins
i needed as much as the rain
needed to fall on my midnight garden

chorus

the day that he found me with the coffer
full of all i couldn’t offer
nuri was filled up with fear and my heart was pounding
but he loved me still as his wife
he buried the mystery all his life
where the smooth stones and the night birds now surround it

and at twilight i bring
an offering to a grave
to bring on my green midnight
come, come my green midnight
come, come my green midnight
